New Middle Grade Novel Reflects how Economic Worries Affect Kids

Lola Zola and the Lemonade Crush

The first in a series, a book for girls age 8-12 by Marcy Winograd and Jackie Hirtz

(Los Angeles, California) Self-assured, goal oriented, eleven year-old Lola Zola tries to support her laid-off parents and her tuxedo cat Bowzer by going into business selling “magical” lemonade rumored to zap wrinkles and promote world peace. Trouble arises when her rich class rival, Buck, aka Slime Bucket, opens a competing ‘limo-nade’ stand out of the back of his father’s Cadillac limousine right across the street from Lola’s house! Intrigue and spy organizations run amok until closely kept secrets are revealed and Lola must decide what it means to win.

Lola Zola and the Lemonade Crush (the first in series of Lola books) is available on Amazon in paperback and for the Kindle. A timely story about tweens weathering today’s financial challenges, the book and its zany star Lola Zola encounter everything from labor strife and business ethics to girl power and puppy love. Though Lola is far from perfect, she is an imaginative problem solver – and ever hopeful that life will turn out all right.

“Lola demands to know the truth about her family’s economic situation; just as her lemonade rival insists on knowing the truth about his father’s alcoholism,” said Marcy. “Ultimately, the story is not about winning lemonade customers but about bridging emotional and class divides and asserting the power of young people to change the world.”

Lola Zola and the Lemonade Crush is set in the fictional desert city of Mirage. In part, this is what makes the story magical. Our characters live in an isolated, yet paradoxically connected, universe in which everyone knows each other and rumors abound. While the geographic line, Cactus Avenue, between the haves and have nots reminds us of our self-imposed limitations, the majestic mountains that surround the city symbolize life’s grandeur – our hopes and dreams.
